How to Shop at an Outlet

feminine
Discovering a great designer piece at an outlet isn't just a matter of luck-there's strategy involved.

1. Don't be fooled.
A lot of brands make clothes specifically for outlets. In many cases you're not getting a bargain-and you may be getting lower quality. Most of the high-end designers outlets, such as Prada, Balenciaga, and Bottega Veneta, get overstock: the real thing, just steeply discounted for a quick sale. The desert Hills outlet outside Palm Springs, California, and Woodbury Common, near New York City, are my favorites because they have a lot of these stores.

2. Know your stuff.
The more familiar you are with a brand, the more likely you are to spot a true deal. Recently, I found Jummy Choo booties in an outlet for half the price-$875-that I saw them for in a department store.

3. Time your visit.
The end of the week is the ideal time to shop because the new merchandise often arrives on Thursday or Friday. The worst time is Saturday or Sunday after 1pm, when the crowds pour in.

4. Aim high.
Big-ticket items, like evening gowns, coats, and anything made from expensive or unusual materials, get the deepest price slashes. I once found a pair of lambskin Gucci pants for $75 that originally cost more than $2,000.

5. Dig deep.
If you have the patience for it, sift through the bargain bins. I unearthed a Chloe cashmere coat for $750 that was originally $5,000 because the belt was slightly scuffed. Just be realistic about what can be fixed. It doesn't matter if something is $1,000 or $10-if it ends up collecting dust in your closet, it is a waste of money.
